Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which contraband was flown from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
