Entire Career of Salary Inadequate for UK Workers to Enter Wealthiest 10%, Analysis Says

Per fresh research, the median employee in the UK would have to work over five decades of income to reach the financial standing of the richest 10% of the population.

Growing Financial Divide Through the Years

This research analyzed net worth information covering the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that in the mid-2000s, it would have needed 38 years of average worker salary to enter the wealthiest decile of the economic ladder.

An economic expert associated with the report stated: "Economic disparities in Britain are now so large that a average worker setting aside their entire income throughout their career would continue to be incapable to reach the top of the wealth ladder."

Assessing the Wealth Divide

The research found that the disparity between the net worth of the average person and a person belonging to the wealthiest decile was £1m in the mid-2000s, but had increased to £1.3 million in real terms by the pandemic years.

The researcher continued: "These differences are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is limited – people that start life affluent tend to remain affluent, and conversely applies."

Relative Wealth Inequality

Despite the financial disparity growing in specific figures, the portion of total wealth in the UK possessed by the wealthiest families – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "largely unchanged since the 1980s," per the study.

Throughout these years, overall assets in the UK surged from triple the gross domestic product, to nearly seven and a half times.

Contributors of Wealth Inequality

So-called "passive" gains, via increasing property values and changes in superannuation evaluations, were the key contributors of the widening wealth gap from 2010 onward, according to the report.

These increases tended to accrue to elderly homeowners, the research shows – exacerbating the age-based economic gap.

Intergenerational Wealth Disparities

The median economic difference between people in their early 30s and sixty-somethings increased over twofold in actual value, from £135k in 2006-08, to £310,000.

Regional Disparities

Furthermore, the study revealed stark regional variations, with the average level of assets in the pandemic period amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the SE of England, where property prices have typically increased quickly, compared with £110k in the northeastern region.

COVID Era Impact

Throughout the COVID period, when numerous employees were covered under the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions limited opportunities for spending, the statistics indicate countless homes were capable of accumulating, growing their net worth.

More affluent homes achieved superior outcomes, however. "The average household in the lowest-income quintile saw their available funds increase by just £80 during the COVID years (from 2019 to 2022), roughly identical to the pre-crisis period. Conversely, the average household in the wealthiest fifth saw their cash reserves grow by 4,200 pounds," the study reveals.
