EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
