Federal authorities has entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's electoral map constitutes a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and mocks the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the new maps will survive legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major counterpunch by the Democratic party in the ongoing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will influence the final years of the sitting president's term, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
